Morocco, the Gardens of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains
23 May–28 May 2020
Tour Leaders: Warwick and Sue Forge
A 6 day tour of Morocco is planned.
The tour of colourful Morocco follows the tour to Portugal. These are very special cultural tours. In Morocco, we are greatly assisted by designer Arnaud Maurieres and various private owners.
Morocco borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and is distinguished by its blend of Berber, Arabian, Sephardi Jews, West African and European influences.
The Marinid and Saadi dynasties resisted foreign domination into the 17th century, allowing Morocco to remain the only northwest African country to avoid Ottoman occupation. Islam is the predominant religion, its official languages are Arabic and Berber though French is still sometimes used.
Morocco is a country of contrasts: the buzz of the medina and exotic souks in Marrakech, (the Garden City – though many are hidden), long views to the mountains and warm and hospitable people, happy to share their history over a glass of mint tea.
Our hotel is the Hotel Country Club Le Beldi situated in the countryside near Marrakech, which the Leymarie family created from an olive grove. It is surrounded by extensive gardens and rose fields with views to the mountains.
Gardens visited provide a balance of intimate courtyard gardens with vibrant plants, colourful tiles, splashing water and country gardens known as jnane (gardens of paradise) with an emphasis on orchards and decorative herb gardens. Gardens created recently are included in our programme. Eric Ossart and Arnaud Maurières have been in demand for their design of arid gardens and we plan to visit one of their latest creations. Many travellers will recall their range of colourful arid gardens at the 2009 Australian Landscape Conference.
A day in the Atlas Mountains is a fascinating experience.
Sue and Warwick Forge lead the tour accompanied by Susan Worner who was responsible for planning our fabulous tour to Provence and Paris.
